FISL 10 is over .. WOW!

I am on my way back from FISL 10 in Porto Alegre, Brazil and what a great conference it was. The president of Brazil stopped in on Friday and addressed the crowd saying how important free software was and that "Free software prevailed [in Brazil] and we don't need to buy anymore only what Microsoft wants to sell". Hopefully Brazil will become even more of an example of how governments can and should adopt open source software.

It was also great to meet Peter Sunde from the Pirate Bay who was giving a talk.

The Sun booth where I was hanging out when not interviewing or giving my talk was busy non-stop every day. The free soccer balls and t-shirts helped, but a lot of people were really interested in finding out more about OpenSolaris, Java and Glassfish.

I got interviews with Chris Dibona from Google, Michael Tiemann from OSI and others. Hopefully I will have a new episode out soon (right after I get the SCALE interviews out :) ).

I also got to attend an international soccer game and ate a lot of good food at the Churrascaria. One of my colleagues from Brazil referred to it as a "meat festival" :) The people at the conference could not have been any nicer and I owe them a big "thank you" for making my stay such a wonderful time. Although, they did leave me by myself with no money at the soccer game. I found out you can learn Portuguese pretty quickly if you have to.

If you have an open source project and are looking for more international support I would highly recommend attending this event. With between 5000 - 8000 attendees annually and support from major Brazilian corporations and the government it is easily one the biggest free software events in the world and probably the biggest community driven one. Can't wait to go again next year!

Video of RMS dancing caporeira

I was on Placentini's blog and he has a link to a video of RMS dancing at the FISL which you have to see.

First time here (came from the boycottnovell links which are simply the best collection of FLOSS ones around) and from what Ive seen, looks like a cool site.

Since I want to know more about the FISL, i will make that episode the first one I listen to.

My friend Arturo helps set up community computer labs in remote regions of Venezuela as well as Cuba and he keeps telling me that as a KDE developer, Brazil is nirvana to him.
Living on island north america, we often have a derisive atittude towards southern hemisphere technologists. But as someone who has been involved in Linux related projects for over a decade, seeing how strong free software is elsewhere in the world is really a great feeling.

5000 - 8000 attendees.
What else can I say but WOW! with a big smile on my face.
With the Social Forum (the true joiner of communities as opposed to the scams for the rich that Bono supports) being a regular event in Porto Alegre, it must be something in teh water there which cause it to be a magnet for social progressive movements.
